I just installed ambling player on htc evo, and added three free books.
It says "Download Paused" please connect to a wifi or phone data network.
Preferences->Wi-Fi Download Only is not checked.
I have Internet. I can browse the web, send and receive email, do all sorts of other things on the Internet. My phone has an IP address.

If the player does not detect any available network connection then it will pause until the Android signals that a network connection has become available. Since the message you are seeing says to connect to a Wi-Fi or phone connection, it appears that the application is not detecting either type of network connection.
If you believe that you should have a network connection try switching the phone into airplane mode for 15 seconds and then switching it back to normal mode. That will cause the network connection state to be updated if there is a network available.
Let me know if that resolves your issue, or if you find that the phone really didn't have network connectivity at the time you saw this message.

The new v2.09 player includes updated internet handling support for detecting and working with the network connectivity state. It can now track and use more than 2 network network connections, which is important because there are a few new Android devices out which support 3 or more radio network types.
We have also changed the player so that it is no longer dependent on getting connectivity change notifications from the Android OS. This was necessary because occasionally these notices may not be delivered could would result in the player not showing the correct network connectivity state.
